Ferrokids
How can we translate the intricate journey of iron into our bodies into an audiovisual narrative? Despite being a micronutrient, meaning we require it in very small quantities, its contribution to maintaining good health is essential, especially in enabling our mature red blood cells (through the hemoglobin within them) to carry the oxygen we breathe to all our tissues. We describe it as a journey because the tiny iron must overcome countless obstacles to reach its destination.
We decided to construct a story that preserves the scientific nomenclature (the names of receptors, transport and storage proteins, enzymes, etc.), while never losing sight of the need to turn this biological adventure into an everyday story, using small clues made of common symbols that help us learn a little science while having fun.
So let’s get to work: To shape our story, let’s start with its protagonist, iron. What shapes and colors do we associate with it? And furthermore, will it be a playful ghost, a little strongman, or perhaps an elegant knight?
An elegant knight, definitely! Tiny, playful, convinced of its importance, and capable of transforming itself as many times as necessary to reach its destination and enable the formation of a vital structure for the life of each of our organs and tissues: the hemoglobin in red blood cells.
